Books don't exist to make you comfortable. They exist to make you think, make you feel, make you reconsider something you thought you already knew. The best ones do all three before breakfast.
We started Acid Squirrel Media because we believe independent publishing is an act of defiance. Against safe stories. Against predictable ideas. Against the publishing machinery that decides what readers want before readers get a vote.
We believe reading is a radical act. Writing is a radical act. Publishing is a radical act. Every book is an assertion that one person's inner life — their imagination, their experience, their argument — is worth another person's time and attention. We don't take that lightly.
We publish fiction that doesn't apologize for being ambitious. Romance that understands love is complicated. Literary fiction that respects your intelligence. Nonfiction that gives you tools instead of opinions. Legal guides written for people who deserve to understand the systems that govern their lives.
We are for everyone. Not as a slogan — as a practice. We actively seek own voices, underrepresented perspectives, and writers who have been told their stories don't have an audience. They do. It's us. And everyone who reads us.
Our authors are not interchangeable. They have points of view. They have arguments to make. We publish them because we believe their arguments are worth having.
We believe books create empathy. We believe they create healing. We believe they create comfort and discomfort in equal measure — sometimes on the same page — and that both are necessary. A book that never unsettles you isn't working hard enough.
We are small. We are independent. We are not interested in the middle of the road.
If you're looking for a safe read, we probably have one of those too. But that's not why we're here.
We're here because good books matter. Because ideas matter. Because the right book at the right moment can change the entire shape of a life.
